Kohima Post Office becomes first core banking office in NE

Kohima: The Kohima Head Post Office of Nagaland on Thursday achieve the crown of becoming the first Post Office with Core Banking facilities of the North Eastern Region and it will have an Automated Teller Machines (ATM) within few days.
Inaugurating the Core Banking Solutions and Sukanya Samriddhi Account at the Head Post Office at Kohima this morning the Postmaster General of North East Circle, Shillong I. Pungernungsang said that the Postal Department of India is gradually stepping towards the banking sector for last three years and today is a red letter day for the Postal history to become the first Core Banking Post Office of the North East at Kohima head Post Office.
He said that the Postal Department of the Government of India is giving more importance to convert the existing Post Offices of the NE Region into banking service with core banking system to reach the masses in the remote areas of the step.
He also announced that the next step in Nagaland will be in Mokokchung and Tuensang and gradually covered all the districts of Nagaland.
He also informed that at present three ATM machines have been granted for Kohima, which will be set up within days, next is Mokokchung and Tuensang.
He also said that saving system of money has gaining momentum throughout the country, especially in Nagaland after the Nagaland Government took initiative and awareness programmes by various banks in the remote areas, however, the banks could not able to touch the remote rural masses due to limited facilities. But the existing Post Offices, especially in remote areas of the state will able to fulfill the need of remote masses with core banking system.
Pungernungsang thanked the staff members of Kohima Post Office for their hard work to make the branch ‘online’ without any outside assistance and appealed all the staff members of the Postal Department of Nagaland to create awareness among the remote rural masses about the Postal Banking Services and to access banking facilities in the Post Offices.
Inaugurating the Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA) at the same premises, Pungernungsang gave away the first SSA account Pass Book to a two-year old girl child as the symbolic inauguration.
He said people are thinking that sons are like ‘suns,’ but daughters are like flowers to spread essence of beauty to make all happy.
He exhorted the people in the function to spread the message that girls are more valuable for the society and it is the duty of all parents to think about their future of their girl children.
He appealed to all to grab the opportunity of SSA, which has given many facilities and high interest for the improvement of whole academic life and even after their marriage.
Earlier, the Director of Postal Service of Nagaland Som Kamei welcomed the guests and appealed to the people of Nagaland to take full advantage of the Postal Banking Service and the SSA scheme for the betterment of everyone’s future. (UNI)

Kohima: Nagaland Vigilance Commission has established misappropriation of funds amounting to Rs 12.79 crore, meant for disabled children by the officials of the state’s School Education department. “It has been established that the officials of the department along with some private individuals were found to be involved in the misappropriation and manipulation of records pertaining to the period from 2011 to 2013,” a notification issued by State Chief Secretary and Vigilance Commissioner C J Ponraj said here Wednesday. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Police has been formed to unearth and identify the circumstances leading to the irregularities in the School Education Department in the utilization of the fund amounting to Rs 12,79,50,000 for implementation of the Inclusive Education for the Disabled at Secondary Stage (IEDSS). The charter of duties of the SIT is to visit all 11 districts in the state and to physically verify the materials procured and dispersed, the Commissioner said. It would ascertain the actual existence of the disabled children as per the figure shown against each school while also examine files, documents and records of administrative approval, sanction orders, etc for withdrawal of funds and the records of disbursement. The SIT would identify person(s) who are involved in implementation of the said programme and the misappropriation of funds thereof, the notification read. The investigating body has been empowered to requisition and seize any files or documents required for the investigation and to interrogate any person(s) as accused as well as witnesses, arrest any officials or individuals found involved in implementation of the scheme, it said. The team has also been directed to complete their probe within a period of four months and submit interim report to the Vigilance Commissioner and to the Court from time to time through the Inspector General of Police, State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption departments, the notification stated.
