SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) along with officers of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) conducted a surprise checking of labour license of labourers constructing office quarter of Geological Survey of India (GSI) at Rynjah, Shillong.

During the checking, they found that the labourers did not posses labour license, EPIC and other documents to ascertain whether they are genuine Indian citizens or not. It was found that 51 labourers posses EPIC while 34 do not.

Again, only five are in possession of labour license while they have to shell out Rs 1500 instead of the usual amount of Rs 700.

The KHADC has stopped the construction work till they prepare proper documents as per requirements of the Council. It is learnt that the contractor is Rocky Dhar, brother of Cabinet minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar.

Youth wing president of KHNAM, Thomas Passah criticized the KHADC for issuing rampant licenses to illegal labourers in the state depriving the local youth from getting employment.
