SHILLONG: With less than six days to go for the counting of votes for the general elections, the State Election Commission is all geared up to ensure that counting process takes place smoothly.

Chief Electoral Officer, FR Kharkongor said that a model counting hall has been set up for the first time in Meghalaya.

One of the components of the model counting hall is the actual counting hall while the other component is the electronically transmitted postal ballot system.

The counting hall will have  VVPAT counting   booths and the Election Commission has instructed that the state election commission have to count 5 VVPATs randomly from  each assembly constituency and so the State Election Commission on the day of counting will have to count VVPATs in 300  polling stations across the state.

In addition, the Deputy Commissioners have also been directed to engage those VVPAT counting officers who have experience in counting .

Presently, five  companies of CAPF are guarding all the  counting centres in the state. There will be three tier security cover for all the counting centres on the day of counting.

The inner most cordon will be guarded by CAPF, the second cordon will be guarded by   State armed police while the outer most cordon will be guarded by District armed police.
