Nongpoh/GUWAHATI: Nongpoh MLA, Mayralborn Syiem has urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to allow reopening of educational institutions in Meghalaya only when the situation in the state was safe for children.
In a letter to the chief minister on Thursday, Syiem stated that, “All educational institutions in the state should be closed until the situation in the state is safe for children. I am of the opinion that schools, colleges, weekly markets should remain closed and public gatherings stopped for the time being so that we can uplift the spirit of social distancing.”
“Before opening of schools and colleges, basic necessary requirements such as face masks, hand wash facilities, process of social distancing have to be in place in all educational institutions,” he stated.
The MLA further suggested that in order to maintain the spirit of social distancing, higher classes may be allowed to open in the first place till mid-June and followed by other classes to be opened on alternate days or after a gap of two days between classes.
“During the time of lockdown, school and college authorities should be encouraged to prepare a homework chart based on the syllabus for students through coordination between teachers and parents,” Syiem stated.
He thanked the state government for handling the situation in the wake of the virus outbreak very actively. “But at the same time, the condition in our state needs to be checked and monitored very closely for some more days to come so that we can control the transmission chain of coronavirus,” he added.
