SHILLONG: The Regional Blood Bank, Pasteur Institute, has appealed to all voluntary blood donors and organizations to come forward and donate blood.
The plea was made on Thursday due to the depleting blood stock.
There is minimal blood replacement and less number of voluntary blood donations which has led to depletion of stocks in the blood bank.
Director of Health Services (DHS) (Research), N. Wanswett said that stocks in the blood bank are depleting and added, “We need to replenish the blood bank”.
She said that voluntary blood donation has not been able to achieve much in the state which is also the same scenario in the entire country. “A healthy donor can donate blood”, she added.
Senior Medical Officer, Dr. C. Budnah said that the stock in the blood bank will be sufficient for another week. The current position is satisfactory.
There has been no blood camp since last month, she said, adding that they can have a blood camp since the government has allowed blood camps to be conducted.
“We have sent an appeal to all voluntary blood donors and organizations to come forward and donate blood”, she said.
Budnah informed that on Thursday, there were 7 blood donors and it was encouraging.
To a question, she said currently the demand for blood is less but it is needed for surgeries of cancer patients, besides thalassemia and delivery cases.
Other blood banks in the city are set up in Nazareth Hospital, Military Hospital, Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital and NEIGRIHMS.
