Policeman held for woman’s murder

TURA: A constable of the 2nd MLP Battalion has been arrested for the murder of a woman whose body was retrieved from a jungle adjacent to the rear gate of the Battalion headquarters at Goeragre, 12 kms from Tura.

The woman identified as Saparine B Marak, 28, hailed from Batabari area near Selsella and was staying in Tura as a tenant to pursue her work.

Police sources inform that the accused constable, Dominic M Sangma, already married, was allegedly having an affair with the woman who only later found out about his marital status. She confronted him over the phone and a heated argument is said to have taken place.

It is believed that the accused constable called up the girl several times on Thursday night asking her to come to Goeragre and meet him to sort out the matter.

Circumstantial evidence obtained by the police indicate that the accused took her to a dense jungle on a hillock overlooking the back gate of the Battalion Headquarters above the Ganol river bridge.

He is said to have committed the murder sometime on Friday itself and tried to pass it off as a suicide by stringing her body onto the branch of a tree.

A local villager who went to the jungle to cut some bamboo to use for fishing came across the decomposing body on Sunday and alerted the authorities.
