SHILLONG: The limitless mental ability of human beings was proved once again on Thursday by Krishan Kumar, an engineer by profession, who broke the record of longest sequence of objects memorised by an individual in one minute, as his endeavour to enter his name in the Guinness Book of world records.

Krishan Kumar, a Delhi-based mechanical engineer, succeeded in achieving the feat by memorising 20 objects in one minute at the Shillong Press Club here on Thursday.

Sudhanshu Singhal currently holds the record by achieving the longest sequence of 17 objects memorised in one minute.

It was a tough task as 30 objects were placed before a blindfolded Kumar. When the objects were placed, Kumar was allowed to memorise all the items in sequence for one minute.

From the 30 objects ranging from an apple to towel, Kumar could memorise 20 of them and that too, in sequence. He took 3 minutes 30 seconds to recall the 20 objects.

Speaking to media persons after achieving the feat, a delighted Krishan Kumar said he remembers everything through a particular technique called mnemonics and he has been using the technique for the last 15 years.

The mechanical engineer in the year 2006 entered the Limca Book of Records for memorising the value of “Pi” up to 43,000 decimal places.

The organizer of the event, Memory Mirchi Networks, claimed to have received the mandate from the Guinness Book of World Records and now the organisers will forward the video clippings of the attempt to Guinness Book of World Records in London.

Now Krishan is aiming to spread the art of memorising especially among students who usually find it tough to memorize their study materials.

He is also against the use of memory tonics as it can cause side effects which can harm an individual’s body.

Krishan had ample reasons to choose Shillong for his world record attempt, saying, “Shillong is considered as the Scotland of the East and it is the best city in the region.” Those who authenticated Krishnan’s record included few government officials and a medical practitioner.
