SHILLONG: A new twist has emerged in the ongoing Shillong jailbreak inquiry after contradictions were found between the police seizure list submitted to the Commission and the earlier police version of the encounter.

According to the police seizure list, Fullmoon Dhar, the mastermind of the May 31, 2009 Shillong jailbreak was lying in an injured condition after being hit by bullets. But according to the police version, Dhar was shot during the encounter and died on the spot.

The contradiction was taken up at the hearing on Tuesday.

The seizure list which revealed the ‘twist’ was procured through RTI application by SCAMoD convenor Agnes Kharshiing, wherein it was mentioned that arms and ammunition were recovered from near the right hand of Dhar who was lying in an injured condition.

Kharshiing further alleged that Dhar was first beaten up by the police after he was captured alive and later shot dead by police.

According to Kharshiing, medical treatment was not given to Dhar even after he was injured.

In Tuesday’s hearing, the then Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police MK Singh was cross examined by lawyers representing SCAMoD.

During the cross examination, MK Singh was questioned about the alleged conversation through cell phones between a businessman from Jaintia Hills Dinush Siangshai and Union Minister of State for Water Resources Vincent Pala on May 9, 2009 and the subsequent communication between Siangshai and Singh days before the jailbreak.

When asked about the telephonic conversation, Singh repeatedly stated: “I cannot say”.

The statement was recorded despite objections by senior counsel for the State KTS Tulsi.

With Tuesday’s hearing, statements of all the police witnesses have been completed.

The next step in the hearing is recording of statement of DG (Prisons) Kulbir Krishan who will appear before the commission on July 15.
