KSU deadline on illegal drilling

SHILLONG: The South West Khasi Hills unit of KSU has set one month deadline for the State Government as well as the KHADC to take legal action against a company, which has allegedly been conducting drilling activities at Porkut – Nongjri in West Khasi Hills since 2009.

A delegation of the KSU unit on Thursday apprised the Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong of the development and urged him to take to stop the ongoing drilling activities.

Earlier in the day, the delegation also met the CEM of KHADC PN Syiem to discuss the issue.

The KSU unit alleged that the Maheswari Mining Pvt Ltd, Ranjniganj West Bengal, has been conducting drilling activities Porkut – Nongjri near Wahkaji under Nongstoin Syiemship in West Khasi Hills district for the last two years without any approval from the concerned authorities.

“We have decided to give a one month ultimatum to the government and the district council to conduct an inspection and take legal action against the company”, KSU unit secretary Peter Kharnaior told reporters later.

Lanong informed the KSU leaders that an inquiry into the matter was on.

The KHADC CEM told the delegation that the council had issued summon to the company but till date there was no response.

It is learnt that the company has been conducting drilling activities since October, 2009.
