NEW DELHI: A self-styled commander of a banned Manipuri outfit and his associate were arrested for their alleged involvement in connection with the recovery of 200 kg of ephedrine worth Rs two crore in April, police said Monday.

Sunil Meitei (35), the self-styled commander of Kangleipak Communist Party (MTF-Sunil Meitie Group), was apprehended from Bangalore while his associate Robindro (43) was arrested from Manipur last week, Arun Kampani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), said. With this, a total of four persons have been arrested in connection with the case.

Police smashed the racket when they arrested one Nepoleon Thockchom from Samalakha village in south-west Delhi on April one while he was going to the Delhi airport.

200 kg of ephedrine, a key precursor for manufacturing amphetamine stimulants such as the ecstasy drug, was recovered from Thockchom.

On May five, one Nangthanbam Anand, the Commander-in-Chief & Publicity Secretary of banned militant organization KCP (MC), was apprehended from Bangalore in this case.

It was during their interrogation that the role of Meitei came out.

Police had in early March received an input that large quantities of ephedrine is being illegally supplied from Delhi to Mayanmar and China via Manipur. “The proceeds of these illegal sales were being sent to various banned militant organizations of Manipur for conducting their nefarious activities,” Kampani said.
