JOWAI: Deinkhlams were brought by various localities to Iawmusiang on the second day of the famous Behdeinkhlam festival on Wednesday.

Deinkhlams – logs with great length – will be kept in Iawmusiang till Thursday.

Members of different localities will erect them in their respective localities and will keep them till Friday, the last day of the festival.

Thousands of people, young and old belonging to the indigenous religion Ka Niamtre, participated in the procession and festivities in Iawmusiang area. Participants danced to the beat of the traditional drums.

The Pnars belonging to the Niamtre celebrate Behdeinkhlam festival to drive away plagues. “Plagues does not only mean pestilence and epidemics, it also includes social evils such as drugs abuse, corruption and others”, Sein Raij president, OR Challam said.

The festival will culminate on Friday at the sacred pool called Aitnar.

AJYWO’s concern: The All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation (AJYWO) has expressed concern over irregular supply of electricity in Khliehriat sub-division.

“Whenever there is rainfall, electricity in the entire Khliehriat Sub-division goes off”, AJYWO vice President, H. Ryngkhlem said.

The AJYWO informed that irregular supply of electricity in the area has affected the consumers badly.

“Prompt action should be taken by the Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited (MeECL) and if required they should change their work culture,” Ryngkhlem said.
