GUWAHATI: The northeast region, mainly Assam, is crucial to producing skilled people with potential for absorption in various sectors within and outside the country, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Skill Development, S Ramadorai said on Thursday.

Stating that as per the Prime Minister’s vision about 500 million skilled people will be required in the country by year 2022, Ramadorai told reporters here that with so much scope for employment, the focus now would be on training and making the people skilled and ready for employment.

“Assam has employment scope in the agro industry, horticulture, fishery, tourism and hospitality, tea industry, IT and IT enabled sector, construction and health care. Skill development will be required,” he said.

‘Green Job’ opportunities would also emerge in energy efficient sectors, water, waste, land, air and carbon management sectors with concerns in these areas at the international level, he said. “The crucial factor is employment and employability. When people are trained they are employable. Technology is a great help in providing training. (We) must be open to all new ideas within and outside the country,” Ramadorai said. (PTI)
