Several hurt in police lathicharge

AGARTALA: Several people, including 11 scribes, were injured allegedly in police lathicharge on the agitators protesting the Tripura Government’s move to hold Common Entrance Test (CET) in the Tripura Medical College (TMC) here on Sunday.

Opposition Congress and civil society members alleged police detained the agitators and lathi charged them leaving at least 44 injured, two of them critically.Prohibitory orders were imposed following the incident, police said.Leader of Opposition Ratanlal Nath alleged several people were critically injured and many went missing following the incident.

He said, ”We demand a judicial inquiry into the incident with a sitting judge.”The Opposition leader alleged that it was ‘pre-planned’ by the CPI(M).

The leader said they would hold a silent rally across the state tomorrow in protest against the incident.

The Tripura Working Journalists’ Association and Tripura Journalists’ Union demonstrated in front of the office of Director General of Police (DGP) K Salim Ali and alleged that the SP West Anish Prasad, along with three other police officers, were involved in the ‘crime’.

Though the DGP assured action within 24 hours, they demanded immediate suspension of the SP and threatened demonstration if their demands were not met with.Security was beefed up in Tripura as the Left Front Government had announced to hold CET and BSc Nursing examination defying the boycott call by the civil society and the Opposition Congress. Meanwhile, Tripura Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty told reporters that TMC could conduct CET as it was a run by a society.

Demonstrations were held before the police headquarters here to press the demand.
