Tribal leader shot dead, kin injured

SILCHAR: Suspected militant shot dead a tribal leader and injured one of his kins at Sabajpur village, about 15 km from here, on Sunday.

The sources said three suspected militants, belonging to Naga community, raided the house of Babul Rongmei (40), chairman of Barak Valley Hill Tribes Development Council at 0800 hrs and shot him at his head from close range by American-made pistol.Rongmei at that time was sitting in his room on the first floor of his house.

Police said the youths, who came in a motor bike, tried to flee from the pace killing Rongmei. But the villagers soon reached here.

At that time one of the militants fired to and fro and a bullet hit the knee of Babute Rongmei (22), brother-in-law of Babul Ronmei.

Although the villagers managed to catch hold of the miscreant, two other fled away by the motorbike.

The villagers lynched the miscreant.Police said the militant died after he was taken to nearby Silchar Medical Collage Hospital (SMCH).

An injured Babute is undergoing treatment in the SMCH, the sources said. Babul Rongmei’s autopsy was carried out at the SMCH.(UNI)
