NCP castigates Govt on civic poll decision

 SHILLONG: The NCP has come down heavily on the State government for its decision to hold elections in municipal areas of Williamnagar, Baghmara, Resubelpara and Tura.

In a statement issued here on Monday, NCP’s East Garo Hills district president Marcuise N Marak said, “If Government has decided to hold elections, then it should hold election in all the municipal areas of the state including that of Khasi and Jaintia Hills.”

According to the party, the decision to hold election only in Garo Hills has raised serious doubts about the intention of the government.

The State Government decided to hold the civic polls on August 6 following a court directive to hold civic polls by September.

The NCP urged the State Government to negotiate with the NGOs, who are scheduled to hold protest rallies on Tuesday at all four major locations of Garo Hills to garner public support against the proposed election.

Meanwhile, in view the proposed rallies, the State Municipal administration department on Monday reviewed the situation with senior police officials.
