Court orders CBI probe into Jagan’s wealth

Hyderabad: In a significant development, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday ordered a preliminary inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged amassing of huge wealth and money laundering by YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. A division bench of Chief Justice Nisar Ahmed Kakru and Justice Vilas V. Afzalpurkar asked the CBI to complete the probe in two weeks and submit the report to the court in a sealed cover. The court said the final hearing would take place after the receipt of CBI report. Hearing a petition on the basis of a letter written by Congress leader P. Shankar Rao, now a minister, the court felt that prima facie inquiry is necessary to clear the doubts. Shankar Rao in January had written a letter to the high court seeking probe by CBI into the “ill-gotten” wealth of Jagan, as Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy is popularly known. (IANS)

 Five AMU professors booked

LUCKNOW: An FIR has been registered against five professors of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for allegedly keeping a black buck in captivity at the varsity campus in Aligarh, police said here on Tuesday. The AMU professors who have been named in the FIR are Chairman Department of Wildlife Sciences Prof Jamal Ahmed Khan, Readers Afifullah Khan and Satish Kumar and faculty members Prof H S A Yahya and Dr Orus Ilyas, they said. The FIR was registered on July 9 by master trainer at the Animal Welfare Board Naresh Kadyan, the police said. The accused have been charged with sections related to cruelty towards an animal and keeping it captive, they said, adding that wildlife activists are demanding that the professors be charged under the more stringent Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The professors were not available for comment. (PTI)

 Police personnel caught taking bribe

Bangalore: Two police personnel were caught redhanded by Lokayukta police on Tuesday while accepting bribe amount from a complainant, a release said. Rayanna, Sub-Inspector and C R Ranganath, Circle Inspector, Doddaballapura police Rural Police station, were caught while they were accepting bribe amounts of Rs 5,000 and Rs 8,000 from the complainant Ambarish, of Doddaballapura taluk, a Lokayukta release said. The duo have been arrested and the matter is being probed. (PTI)

 AIIMS docs on hunger protest

New Delhi: Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here on Tuesday continued their indefinite hunger protest demanding reinstatement of a former resident brain surgeon who was cleared of charges of harassing a boy under his treatment. “This is the second day of our hunger protest and we are not budging till the terminated doctor is brought back to service,” Debajyoti Karmakar, president of the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA), told IANS. “You cannot punish someone when even the law has proved him not guilty,” he added. Shejoy P. Joshua, a brain surgeon with AIIMS, was suspended on Feb 3 after the relatives of an eight-year-old boy being treated by him complained that the physician had sodomised the child in his room. The junior resident doctor was accused of molesting the boy, a resident of northeast Delhi who was admitted to the neurosurgery ward for a brain tumour operation Jan 18. A police investigation detected gaps and ambiguities in the accusations against the physician, who was then given a clean chit. (IANS)

 NHRC notice to Delhi govt

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued a notice to the Delhi government asking it to submit a report on the incident of a woman delivering a baby in front of a hospital after being denied admission. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Health Secretary, seeking detailed reports within two weeks, a Commission spokesperson said. The action came on a complaint alleging that a woman was forced to deliver a baby in front of the emergency gate of Dr Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini on Moday when doctors refused to admit her. “The complainant prayed for action against errant doctors of the hospital and sought compensation for the victim of medical negligence. He also requested the Commission to issue directions to the concerned authorities for stopping recurrence of such an incident,” the spokesperson said. (PTI)
