SHILLONG: The Leader of Opposition Conrad Sangma has welcomed the decision of the State Government to halt the elections to four municipal boards in Garo Hills.

Talking to media persons here on Thursday, the Conrad said, “The decision to reschedule the municipal polls is a correct step.”

The polls have been rescheduled in the wake of the call for a week-long strike by NGOs under the banner of a joint action committee against the civic elections in Garo Hills.

The Government should take all the stakeholders into confidence before going ahead with the municipal polls, Conrad said, adding, if elections are to be held it should be held in the entire state.

The Leader of Opposition also said a debate should be held on the municipal act and its implications instead of holding municipal polls.
