SHILLONG: The figure of crimes against women in the State would be many times higher than thought if one goes by the fact that as many as seven alleged rape cases are reported every week to the Ganesh Das Hospital in the city.

Medical Superintendent (MS) of the government-run hospital on Friday said on an average six to seven alleged victims of rape are admitted to the hospital.

“A few are reported to police and others are not, because of reservations posed by the victims and their families,” Dr W Rynjah, the MS, told reporters.

She, however, retracted her earlier statement that as many as five alleged rape victims are admitted to the hospital every day, only to say, “It is six to seven a week.”

The Medical Superintendent, meanwhile, expressed her discontentment against the media saying, “Lot of rapes go unreported in the media. Media persons should see for themselves here as to how many rape victims come to this hospital every day.”
