Mumbai: Police have ordered an investigation into the death of a young man who died of brain haemorrhage here early on Sunday after being detained for suspected links with the July 13 bomb attacks.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will ascertain the circumstances leading to the death of Faiz Usmani in the Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, just a few hours after he was questioned.

Usmani’s distraught family, alleging foul play by police, staged a noisy protest outside the hospital in the afternoon.

Usmani was picked up for questioning to ascertain his alleged role in the blasts which killed 19 people and left more than 100 injured.

On Saturday evening, according to official version, he suddenly took ill, started vomiting and was rushed to the hospital.

He breathed his last a few hours later, at 1.20 am on Sunday, a medical officer said.

The officer explained that when Usmani was brought to the hospital, he had high blood pressure and there was excess amount of blood in his brain.

“We did all tests on the patient and it was a case of a massive haemorrhage,” the officer said.

His post-mortem was conducted in the morning while a second autopsy is likely.

Meanwhile, the doctors at the hospital said that there were no external injuries on Usmani’s body and the postmortem report is yet to be prepared, which would be submitted to police very soon.

The dead man was the brother of Afzal Usmani, one of the prime accused in the Ahmedabad and Surat terror bombings. Both were linked to Indian Mujahiddeen. (Agencies)
