Editor,

I want to bring to the notice of all A’chiks the sad news of the illness of Mr. Raphael Marak, singer, song-writer, and the A’chik equivalent of Bob Dylan. When our traditional music was dying, it was he who brought it to life by not only composing traditional songs but teaching many in the art of playing our musical instruments. The ‘Chigring Orchestra’ taken by him to several cities of India was much appreciated by all. His contributions to the music and culture of the Garos have been immense.

He is under treatment for cancer at the Cancer Hospital in Jorabat. He is a man with meagre earnings so I feel it is our turn now to show our love, appreciation and support for his contributions to our people through our financial contributions to him and his wife to help them tide over the enormous expenses they have and will incur for his long term treatment. You can deposit your contributions in the following savings account number of Raphael Ch. Marak in the State Bank of India, Chandmari Branch, Tura – Account Number: 10669957737.

I am making this appeal with the full knowledge and approval of Raphael.

Yours etc.

Iris Watre Thomas,
