AIZAWL: A man of Myanmarese origin was arrested with an AK-56 rifle at South Vanlalphai under Lunglei district yesterday, policeon Monday said.
Acting on a tip-off from Aizawl-based BSF branch, a joint team of South Vanlaiphai police and DSB, Aizawl, arrested Ngunthawngliana(58) with the assault rifle from the house of one Abdul Malik, a resident of South Vanlaiphai.
Malik was about to buy the arm for Rs 2,80,000. Ngunthawngliana was residing at south Vanlaiphai since 2005.
Police sources said Ngunthawngliana claimed that the smuggled arm did not belong to him. A Myanmarese national Kaplawmthanga asked him to sell to Malik and get a commission of Rs 5000.
Just when Malik was about to deliver the money, the police arrived and arrested him, he was quoted as saying.
The BSF group got the information about a month back and alerted the Aizawl branch DSB.
After waiting for nearly a month, they got a tip-off on Saturday that the smuggled gun was about to arrive at South Vanlaiphai and laid a trap. (UNI)
