SHILLONG: The construction work for laying of the artificial turf in the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium will begin in the month of July. Talking to media persons here, the Deputy Chief Minister and incharge Sports and Youth Affairs Bindo M Lanong maintained that the work for laying the artificial turf has been given to a private firm called Field Turf from Hyderabad. “The firm has done similar artificial turf projects in Kolkata and Sikkim,”Lanong added. The Government had sanctioned Rs 5.13 crore for the artificial turf work and the entire project would take three months to complete. It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Cricket Association president Conrad Sangma had chipped in with a contribution of Rs 25,000 from his salary as a legislator and pressured the government to either fund the improvement of the ground or raise funds through public contributions. Menwhile, the Shillong Lajong FC has opted for two venues in Assam and another in Manipur as their home venues if the laying of the artificial turf at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here is not completed by October when the league will commence.
