Arsenic contamination found in six Arunachal districts

Itanagar: Arsenic contamination in water sources have been detected in six districts of Arunachal Pradesh .

A survey carried out by the North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWLM) in Assam’s Sonitpur district have detected high proportion of arsenic in Papum Pare, East Kameng, West Kameng, Lower Subansiri, Lower Dibang Valley and Tirap districts.

A survey report prepared by A K Singh, Associate Professor and adviser, soil and water testing and microbiology lab of NERIWLM, said that Lower Dibang Valley has the maximum arsenic contamination among the affected districts followed by Lower Subansiri and West Kameng .

In a letter to the department of Public Health Engineering & Water Supply (PHE&WS), Dibang Valley based NGO Abralow Memorial Multipurpose Society (AMMS) drew the attention of the authorities and stressed on the need for mass awareness.

“It is to be noted that the unusual high concentration of the arsenic content in Hunli and Midland areas of the district, the portability of ground water may seriously affect human health. It is also the need of the hour to make a long term environment planning to break the danger from such pollution,” the NGO pointed. (PTI)
