Farmer shot dead in Patna
Patna: A farmer was shot dead by criminal at Chainpur village under Bypass police station area here on Sunday. Police said, miscreants opened fire on farmer Shiv Shankar Prasad while he was going for worship in a temple. He died on the spot in the attack. Criminals managed to escape from the spot after the incident, police said, adding relatives of the victim had named three persons as the accused in the FIR lodged at bypass police station. (UNI)
Three family members killed
Burdwan: Three persons of a family were on Sunday shot dead by some unidentified men at Gajipur village in Katwa subdivision of Burdwan district, police said. Taron Sheikh, Angur Bibi and Shabit Sheikh were engaged in farming when the persons came and took Taron away to a nearby brick kiln and shot at him, leading to his death on the spot, Katwa sub-divisional police officer Jyotirmoy Roy said. On hearing gunshots, his wife and son rushed to the brick kiln and they were also shot dead, he said. An old dispute was suspected to be the motive behind the killing, Roy said, adding that Taron Sheikh had past criminal records. (PTI)
Dalit girl gangraped
Ghaziabad: A teenage dalit girl was allegedly abducted in broad daylight and gangraped in a sugarcane field by three men in Garhmukteshwar, police said. A case has been registered against three persons, residents of Badarkha village, late yesterday night and one has been arrested while the other two are still absconding, they said. The medical examination of the girl will be conducted in a government hospital on Sunday, they said. The 19-year old girl, a resident of Nanai village, had left her home on Friday evening and spent the night at Hapur railway station and travelled to Garhmukteshwar yesterday, family sources said. Elephant herd blocks road traffic
Jalpaiguri (WB): A herd of 25 elephants strayed into Banarhat area of Jalpaiguri district on Sunday virtually blocking vehicular movement along NH 31 for over an hour. Forest Minister Hiten Burman said there was an injured elephant calf in the herd, which was camping on the arterial road with forest personnel, police, local people and NGOs keeping a watch on the situation. A local NGO claimed that it was informed by its counterparts in Nepal that the herd came from the forests in that country and the injured calf was nursing a bullet injury it had received. (PTI)
Forest department sources, however, said the herd might have also come from Moreghat forest range in the district. (PTI)
Mob attack three persons on suspicion of being witches
Berhampur (Orissa): Three persons were hit with hot iron rods by a mob on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Orissa’s Ganjam district. Police said on Sunday the trio was being beaten with hot iron rods at Kumarpari village following which a police team rushed to the area and rescued them yesterday. The mob had also attacked the cops. The villagers blamed them as witchcraft practitioners after some children in the locality fell ill. The three were later taken to hospital. (PTI)
Van falls in river, one killed
Jammu: A man was killed and 35 others were injured when a van rolled down into the Tawi River in Udhampur district on Sunday. The vehicle on its way from Kardli-Barmeen to Udhampur town skidded off the bridge and rolled down into the river at Ladna power house, 70 kms from here, police said. In the mishap, one person was killed and 35 others injured, he said, adding the injured have been hospitalised. (PTI)
Five killed in mishap near Jaipur
Jaipur: Five unidentified persons were on Sunday killed when their car rammed into a stationary truck on the Jaipur-Delhi highway in the district, police said. The incident occurred near Kotputli area in the wee hours today when the passengers were moving towards Delhi from Jaipur, the police said, adding that efforts were being made to ascertain their identity.
