Shillong: The State Government has been accused of shielding a tainted official who has been alleged to have outraged the modesty of a woman.

Sources said the State Government is yet to initiate action against Marshall Marbaniang, a Health Engineering Wing Sub Divisional Officer (SDO), who was alleged to have molested a nurse inside her quarter at Nonghyllam, West Khasi Hills on February 18 and arrested subsequently.

As per the law, any government official who had spent 48 hours inside a police lock-up is liable for suspension, sources said.

“But surprisingly the Government has not initiated any action against Marbaniang who is still discharging his duties as SDO,” sources alleged.

There are also allegations that the SDO had used his influence to manipulate with the litigation against him.

“The victim had put up an appeal for shifting of the case from the ADM court to the District Council Court. The appeal for shifting of the case was also accepted. But at the last minute the case was again referred back to the ADM court,” the sources said, adding this is a clear indication that the SDO is an influential person.
