Agartala: Deficient monsoon rains, coupled with high humidity, have made life terrible in Tripura over the past four days forcing the government to bring electricity from outside to reduce the shortfall in demand.
According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) report, Tripura has recorded about 27 per cent deficit in monsoon rains this year comparatively better downpour in Northeast after Arunachal Pradesh.
The lowest rainfall has been recorded in Manipur followed by Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram so far, which affected the generation of hydro-power in the region.
Tripura Power Minister Manik Dey told reporters here today that the ever highest power consumption had been recorded at 194 MW against the own generation of 100 MW yesterday and despite sincere attempt Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) could not manage procurement of 49 MW power the state.
”For the past two days the power consumption rose near 200 MW, estimated about 90 MW shortfalls in supply that resulted about two hours loadshedding in the state to manage the situation,” Dey said. He, however, pointed out that the use of cooler and air conditioners had increased substantially even in rural areas in such extreme weather condition persisting over a week across the state and as a result, power consumption had also increased.
