SHILLONG: In a bid to tackle the problem of unemployment in the state, the Labour department has provided resources and fund to the unemployed youths to enhance their skills, said Meghalaya Chief Secretary, WMS Pariat.

Speaking at the Labour Officers’ Conference held at the Hotel Pinewood here on Wednesday, Pariat said the Labour department was looking into skill development in various activities for the youths of the state.

“The thrust is more on skill development and enhancing the capability of the youths who traditionally look for white collared jobs,” the Chief Secretary said.

Deputy Chief Minister, in-charge Labour Rowell Lyngdoh informed the state government has implemented various social security schemes like the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) for workers in the unorganized sector.

“The social security scheme like the ESIC would cater to the socially and economically weaker sections of the society.” Lyngdoh said.

He also informed that the ESIC would guarantee medical care to the workers and their dependants while adding that “The government was committed to implement various labour laws for the benefit of the labourers”.
