SHILLONG: The State Government may have reduced the motor vehicle tax by 25 per cent following severe protests but there are allegations that the District Transport Office (DTO) is collecting tax as per the earlier revised rates.

Wandmabok Jyrwa, general secretary of East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Association, on Friday alleged that the DTO was collecting the tax as per the previous hiked rates.

Reacting to the allegation, Transport Minister AT Mondal on Friday said the Government would issue a notification regarding the 25 per cent tax slash within one week. “The Excise, Registration, Taxation, Stamps (ERTS) department is currently working on it and will forward the matter to the Transport department following which we would issue the notification,” Mondal added.

Jyrwa, however, maintained that they were yet to receive any official notification about the tax cut from the Government.

“We are still in the dark about the new rates after the 25 per cent deduction,” Jyrwa added.

It may be mentioned that the State Cabinet had decided to slash the revised rates of Motor Vehicles Tax and the rates of Composite Tax on Tourist vehicles by 25 per cent after NGOs of the State protested against the arbitrary hike by the State Government.
