SHILLONG: With an aim to tackle the unemployment problem in the State, the Nehru Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) on Thursday launched a special project (Phase I) on youth employability skill (YES) development.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has selected Meghalaya and Manipur for the pilot project.
Under the said project a three-month training course will be conducted in all the 59 districts of the eight Northeastern states in the current financial year.
In Meghalaya, 50 unemployed youths from the five districts will undergo the three-month training programme
Launching the project, Deputy Chief Minister (In-Charge of Labour) Rowell Lyngdoh said there was a need to bridge a gap between the industrial sectors looking for skilled individuals and the unemployed youth in the State. “There were instances where employment opportunities are abundant in the companies and industrial sectors but it is quite an irony to see that our youth are still unemployed and the main reason being, they lack the skills and capabilities required by these industries,” he said.
“Many acquire skills in their respective activities but lack training so there is a need to shape their talents and skills,” Lyngdoh said.
The Zonal Director NYKS, Shillong CP Lotha hoped these training programmes would instill a sense of confidence and satisfaction among the unemployed. The said project is implemented by the NYKS in collaboration with National Skill Development Council (NSDC) and B-ABLE (Basix Academy for Building Lifelong Employability Limited), New Delhi.
