IMPHAL: People of Manipur on Friday paid their last tributes to Congress MLA Elangbam Suraj(44) who was tragically killed in a road accident at Mayur Vihar, New Delhi.
His mortal remains were brought home on Friday by air from New Delhi.
They were was taken to Congress Bhawan where party members paid floral tributes. It was then taken to the Assembly complex and Speaker and member of the Assembly I Hemochandra along with the other staff paid floral tributes.
A condolence meeting was held at the Assembly complex. Large numbers of people took his body to his house at Wangkhei for the last rites.
Former Chief Minister Rishang Keishing MP said the death of Elangbam Suraj in a road accident on Thursday was a sad ending of a political career.
Governor Gurbachan, in his condolence message to the family of the deceased said Suraj was one of the young leaders of the state who had a great future waiting for him.The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) condoled the MLA’s demise by lowering the Congress flag half mast.
The Chief Minister in a message said, ”I am deeply shocked to learn about the sudden demise of Elangbam Suraj Singh who was a man of principle and great political vision. A gentle soul, who will be fondly remembered by all of us for his straight forwardness and understanding nature. On his demise, the State has lost an eminent political leader.”
”On behalf of the government and the people of Manipur and on my behalf, I would like to convey our deepest condolences and sympathies to the members of the bereaved family and pray the Almighty to give them strength to withstand this loss, in this hour of sorrow,” the CM added.
Born on March 11, 1965 at Moirangkhom, Imphal, Elangbam Suraj, was the first son of Late Elangbam Kunjeshar Singh, member of Manipur Legislative Assembly. He was elected to the ninth Manipur Legislative Assembly on INC ticket.(UNI)
