Swansea held, QPR win in EPL

SWANSEA: Newly promoted Swansea had goalkeeper Michel Vorm to thank for saving a penalty and ensuring his side picked up its first point of the season with a goalless draw against Wigan. In the first Premier League match ever to be held outside of England, the Welsh side enjoyed the better of the first half but Wigan, under former Swansea manager Roberto Martinez, improved after the break. In a flurry of activity, Jordi Gomez hit the post from 25 yards (meters) before Victor Moses fired a shot against the bar and from the rebound, Ashley Williams fouled Gomez to give the visitors a 73rd-minute penalty. Vorm saved Ben Watson’s spot kick to salvage a point for the hosts, who are still waiting to score their first goal of the season after a 4-0 loss at Manchester City in their opener. Meanwhile, Queens Park Rangers celebrated its takeover by Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes with a 1-0 win at Everton in the English Premier League on Saturday. Tommy Smith scored the winning goal after 31 minutes, controlling Akos Buzsaky’s pass before turning and shooting low into the far corner. QPR was routed 4-0 at home on its return to the topflight after 15 years away last Saturday, but the mood at the club was lifted when Fernandes completed his takeover on Thursday. (Agencies)

Sporting Clube de Goa lift Super Cup

Vasco: Sporting Clube de Goa on Saturday beat Dempo Sports Club 6-4 in a penalty shoot-out to lift the Super Cup here. Both the teams were tied 3-3 in the regulation time at the Tilak ground here. Sporting took the lead on the 13th minute when Bisheswara Singh took advantage of a defensive lapse on Dempo’s side. After the change of ends, Sporting continued to hold the upper hand and increased the lead on the 57th minute. However, Dempo fought back at 71st minute and reduced the margin when substitute Ranty Martins’ superb header from a cross by Nicolau Borges stunned the reigning champions. Dempo, however, suffered a setback when Joe Rodrigues was sent off by the referee after he handled the ball inside the box. Sporting player Dawson Fernandes made no mistake to find the net from the penalty. Down by two goals, Dempo returned the fire at the 85th minute. In the dying minutes, Dempo found the equaliser through Joy Ferrao who scored with a stiff grounder. In the tie-breaker, Dempo’s Rany Martins, Koko Sakibo and Franco Godwin failed to score. (PTI)
