Guwahati: Traders community in the city on Tuesday lent their support in an overwhelming way to the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare.

All the business establishments in greater Guwahati area, the main commercial hub in the Northeastern region, kept their shutters down till 1 P.M. on Tuesday to express solidarity with Gandhian leader in his crusade against corruption and demanding adoption of Jan Lokpal Bill.

Various bodies of traders in greater Guwahati joined hands to send a strong message in support of Anna Hazare and demanding the UPA government in the Centre to relent to the demand of the Team Anna. The businessmen brought out several processions in different parts of the city where people from all walks of life have joined spontaneously. Some young people brought out motor-cycle rallies shouting slogans and holding the National Tricolour afloat.

The rallies coming out from different parts of the city later converged at the bank Dighalipukhuri (Tank) in the heart of the city where Assam chapter of India Against Corruption has been organizing continuous demonstration and hunger-strike for the eighth day today in support of Anna Hazare’s movement.

Meanwhile, students community across Assam has lauded Anna Hazare’s movement and demanded that Jan Lokpal Bill adopted to fight corruption in the state. A cross section of students in the state’s premier Cotton College were of the opinion that only Jan Lokpal Bill couldn’t help wipe out corruption unless the people of the country become alert against corruption. They said Jan Lokpal Bill could become only a milestone in fight against corruption.
