SHILLONG: Ri-Bhoi Dep-uty Commissioner M Kharmujai will meet the leaders of the NGOs which have called for a day-long office picketing on August 25 protesting the government’s decision to recognize the Marngar community as the Scheduled Tribe (ST).

‘I will request the NGOs to call off their agitation to avoid any breakdown of law and order situation in the district,” Kharmujai said on Tuesday.

When contacted, KSU’s North Khasi Hills president Donkupar Sumer said the organisation accepted the invitation of the Deputy Commissioner.

When asked on the possibilities of calling off the proposed office picketing, he said it would depend on the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting.

Meanwhile, the district administration has indicated imposition of the Section 144 CrPC if the NGOs decide to go ahead with its agitation.
