Shillong: A State police constable posted on duty at the residence of a Union Minister allegedly attempted to commit suicide on Wednesday morning in the national capital by shooting himself with his service rifle.

Donkupar Marbaniang, 30, of the 4th Meghalaya Police Battalion was seriously injured when he tried to commit suicide at the official residence of Union Minister for Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal.

A senior police official from New Delhi informed that the constable reported for duty at the gate of the official quarter at around 5:15 am.

However, at around 5:30 am his colleagues found him lying in a pool of blood near the gate. A senior havildar at the Union minister’s residence immediately informed the Police Control Room (PCR) Van of the New Delhi police. Marbaniang was then shifted to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital for treatment.

The bullet fired from his service rifle pierced his abdomen before exiting, the police official said.

“The constable is out of danger and he is recuperating at the hospital,” the official added.

Meanwhile, the official informed that an inquiry headed by the Battalion’s second-in-command has been ordered. “The preliminary inquiry has already been completed and we are awaiting the final report,” he said, adding, “We are unsure whether the constable had shot himself or he sustained the injury by accident.”

It may be reminded that in January last year, a constable of the 3rd MLP Battalion had committed suicide by hanging himself near the Battalion mess of the Vikaspuri Police lines in New Delhi.

The constable, Kurson Sangma (32), was part of the Indian Reserve Battalion unit posted at the Lampur detention centre from where three Pakistan nationals awaiting deportation had escaped earlier that month.
