Agartala: Police have detained a private tutor for chopping off a teenaged girl’s hand on the outskirts of Kamalpur town under Dhalai district in North Tripura.

Police said Sanjoy Das(40) had attacked Susmita Das(17) on Tuesday with a sharp weapon, severing off her hand, when she was going for tuition with her mother.

Sanjoy fled after the incident and consumed poison at his house. Police found him in an unconscious state, shifted him to the Kamalpur Hospital and subsequently detained him.

Hospital authorities described his condition as critical. Police said the teacher had developed an affair with the Class X student. Both of them had eloped to Bangladesh in February.

Police had arrested Sanjoy in May following a complain of kidnapping against him. He was sent to jail and was released last week. Meanwhile, Susmita was shifted to the Agartala Government Medical College and Hospital. (UNI)
