Rajiv killers: Woman HR activist commits self-immolation

KANCHEEPURAM: The campaign for commuation of death sentence to the three accused in Rajiv Gandhi assasination case took a tragic turn as a 25-year-old-woman committed self-immolation in the temple town of Kancheepuram today.

According to police, Sengodi, owing allegience to People’s Forum Movement (Makkal Manram), took the extreme step protesting in front of the Taluk Office. She doused herself with petrol and set herself ablaze. People in the vicinity, who saw the ghastly act, rushed her to Government Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

The woman, who hailed from Orikkai area, shouted slogans against the sentence and that their lives to be saved.

A suicide note was recovered from her residence in which she stated that she was emulating Tamil activist Muthukumaran who had committed self-immolation in front of PIB office in Chennai against alleged genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka when the war between the LTTE and Sri Lanka broke out.

Sengodi had participated in the human chain agitation demanding commutation of the death sentence of Murugan, Shanthan and Perarivalan.

MDMK leader Vaiko, Naam Thamilar Iyakkam leader and film director Seeman and veteran Tamil Nationalist Pazha Nedumaran announced that they would attend the funeral of Sengodi on Monday.(PTI)
