Shillong: Taking note of the growing problem of unemployment in the State, Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prof AN Rai, has stressed on the need to impart knowledge which is oriented to a particular job.

Addressing a gathering at the Golden Jubilee celebration of the North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) at Sri Aurobindo Ashram here on Thursday, Prof Rai said the need of the hour is to impart job oriented knowledge which can go a long way to solve the problem of unemployment among the youth in the State.

He also stressed on the need to make optimum use of the current resources saying there are a lot of scopes for improvement. “If we can really see the availability of resources around us, then we won’t have too much problems in looking for additional resources for further improvement,” added Prof Rai.

Pointing out that corporal punishment was a deterrent to a child’s mental behaviour, growth and development, Prof Rai said the schools should get rid of this kind of punishment and expressed surprise over the reactions of parents in relation to this punishment. “Most parents are in favour of corporal punishment since they believe it is one way to discipline a child, but what they fail to see is the harmful effect of it,” the Vice Chancellor added.

“Disciplining children has always been in the form of scolding and punishment but in fact the best way is to train them from an early age so that they become responsible. There is a need to teach parenting skills to the parents to ensure the betterment of the child,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Padmashree awardee and Principal of Jyoti Sroat School, Bertha Dkhar, said convention of the rights of the children should come into place and it should be reflected in administration, policy making and implementation.

Commenting on imparting education to children with special needs, Dkhar said there is a need to put the inclusive education into practice in schools as this is a way to make the children with special needs feel safe and wanted. “But this can only be done if the teachers are provided with the right kind of training in this regard – one being motivation,” she stated.

Earlier, Prof Rai launched the official website of NERIE – www.nerie.nic.in.

Other dignitaries present on the occasion included Director of the Educational Research and Training LR Sangma, Principal of NERIE GP Bakshi, teachers, parents and students.
