‘Soumitra Sen’s signature not original’
NEW DELHI: The signature on Calcutta high court judge Soumitra Sen’s resignation letter – which was faxed to President Pratibha Patil Thursday – has been found “not original”, the spokesperson for the President has said.”The signature in the faxed letter has been found not original. We are waiting for the hard copy of the letter to arrive and check the signature,” Archana Datta, spokesperson of the President, said.”Let the letter come. Any decision by the President will be only after that,” she added.Meanwhile, the President’s office has handed over the faxed letter to the Department of Law and Justice, the spokesperson said.Sen, against whom an impeachment motion was passed in the Rajya Sabha for financial irregularities, announced his resignation in Kolkata Thursday through his lawyer. The Lok Sabha was due to take up the impeachment proceedings Sep 5. Sen sent a copy of the letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar too. (IANS)
Man held for ‘raping’ sister-in-law
JALNA: A man has been arrested for allegedly raping his sister-in-law and making a video clip of the act, police said on Friday.The women’s husband and in-laws, residents of Pension Pura area here in central Maharashtra, have also been booked for allegedly torturing her for dowry, they said.According to the police, the victim’s husband Shaikh Harun Shaikh Hussain (40), brother-in-law Aleem Shaikh Hussain (30), father in-law Shaikh Hussain and mother-in-law Khatimabi demanded Rs 50,000 from her for buying a plot.When she expressed her inability to get the money from her parents, she was tortured and later driven out of home by her husband and other family members, Inspector R P Pardeshi said, quoting the complaint filed by the woman.The woman alleged that her brother-in-law had been raping her for two years and also video recorded the alleged act, he said.Aleem was arrested o Thursday , while the others are absconding, police said.(PTI)
2G case: No iregularities committed, says Jaswant
NEW DELHI: With the CBI deciding to examine Jaswant Singh in 2G spectrum case, the senior BJP leader, who was the finance minister in NDA government, on Friday said that no irregularities were committed during his tenure.”No irregularities were committed during my tenure. If someone deliberately digs out and alleges that there is irregularity then I am saddened,” he told reporters outside Parliament, a day after the CBI told the Supreme Court that Singh would be examined as part of its probe into the scam.Singh said he has received no communication from the CBI or from the government about examining him but added that he was “glad” that the agency was performing its duty.”I will cooperate with them fully. “I don’t know whether I am going to be roasted, grilled or toasted,” he said.Asked about BJP’s statement accusing the CBI of discrimination for not questioning Dayanidhi Maran and P Chidambaram, he recited a couplet from scripture ‘Ramcharitmanas’ that “powerful men cannot be held guilty”.The CBI had on Thursday told the apex court that probe in the 2G spectrum allocation scam has shown “violation” of norms during NDA regime when late Pramod Mahajan and Arun Shourie were the telecom ministers and said the then finance minister Jaswant Singh would be examined.(PTI)
Centre’s go-ahead to CBI probe into Shehla
NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday gave the go- ahead to a CBI probe into the murder of Madhya Pradesh RTI activist Shehla Masood in Bhopal.”We received a letter from the MP government and have forwarded it to CBI for its views,” Minister of State for Department of Personnel V Narayanasamy told PTI here.He said “I have just cleared the file and granted permission for a CBI probe into the case.”The Centre had received a letter from Madhya Pradesh government requesting for a CBI probe into the murder of Masood in Bhopal.Masood was shot dead outside her residence in Bhopal on August 16.Madhya Pradesh Police, probing the case, is likely to question BJP leader Tarun Vijay in connection with the incident.(PTI)
