Congressman Syed Ahmad to be sworn in as Jharkhand Governor
Ranchi: Veteran Congressman Syed Ahmad will be administered oath of office as the eighth Governor of Jharkhand at the Raj Bhawan here on Sunday. A PhD in Urdu and Master of Arts in English and Hindi, Dr Ahmad is a five-time Congress legislator from Mumbai’s Nagpada constituency. He has been associated with the Indian National Congress since 1977. State’s cabinet and coordination department Principal Secretary, Aditya Swarup said working Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court Prakash Chandra Tatia would administer oath to Dr Ahmad. Dr Ahmad’s predecessor MOH Farook was transferred as the Governor of Kerala for the rest of his term. (UNI)
Local politician shot at in UP
Sitapur: The district vice president of Peace party was shot at by an assailant in Khairabad area of Sitapur district. One Ashutosh Shukla, resident of Sidhauli town of the district, shot at Rajesh Chaudhary, resident of Rahimabad on Friday night. The leader was rushed to trauma centre at Lucknow in serious condition, police said. Police have launched a manhunt for Ashutosha Shukla and trying to ascertain the reason behind the incident. (UNI)
Five women drown in canal
Muzaffarnagar: Five women drowned when the vehicle, they were travelling in, fell into east Yamuna canal in Kandhla area of this Uttar Pradesh district late on Friday evening. All of them were returning to Kairana after attending a “Tehravi” ritual when in attempt to save the vehicle from a speeding truck, the driver lost control and it fell into the canal, a police spokesman said. The bodies of Kailasho(60), Ramesho(55), Kuashal (40) and Vimla (40) were retrieved today, while Sunitra’s corpse was still untraceable, the police added. The locals managed to save 12 people. (UNI)
Woman kidnapped in UP district
Kaushambi: Three motorcycle-borne assailants kidnapped a woman, who was on a bike with her husband near Saurahi village under Saini police station area of Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh late on Friday night. Pappu Tiwari, resident of Saurahi village, was returning to his village with his wife Gudia (22) on a bike in Sirathu, when three motorcycle-borne assailants started chasing then. The assailants caught hold of the couple and beat the husband with lathis. They robbed them of their valuables and kidnapped his wife, the additional Superintendent of Police (Addl SP) M P Verma said here on Saturday. The husband had been admitted to hospital while the search for the women was launched. (UNI)
Huge cache of narcotic drugs seized
Chittorgarh: The police have seized huge cache of opium and brown sugar in Nimbahera town of this district on Saturday morning, a police spokesman said. The contraband–70 Kg of opium and 200g of brown sugar–, was found from a car during search of vehicles under the ongoing Operation “Black Gold”, on the outskirts of Nimbahera this morning, the spokesman said. Three drug traffickers from Madhya Pradesh were arrested in this connection, he said. (UNI)
2 die, curfew clamped in Ujjain
Ujjain: Two people were killed and more than a dozen –including police personnel– injured in a late-night clash near a place of worship in this communally-sensitive ancient temple town where curfew was subsequently clamped in all ten police station limits even as authorities said on Saturday that the situation was under control. Additional security personnel, including two platoons of the Rapid Action Force, were deployed. Senior administrative officers are monitoring the situation. Friday night’s disturbances occurred in the old town area where two groups disputed; a confrontation ensued and stone-pelting began. Though a lathi-charge dispersed the lawbreakers, a larger crowd gathered soon after and police vehicles were stoned. To disperse the mob, tear smoke shells were fired and other measures resorted to. Initially, curfew was clamped in six police station areas. At least a dozen people were taken into custody. (UNI)
Khap expels man from village
Jaipur: A khap panchayat (caste council) in Rajasthan has expelled a man from their village after it found him guilty of murdering an 11-year-old boy, police said Saturday. The incident happened in Karauli district’s Garet village, some 180 km from here. It came to light Friday. “Vishnu was found dead in his brother-in-law Ramesh Meena’s house on August 27. The parents did not inform the police. They instead asked the khap panchayat to take action,” a police officer told IANS. A police team was rushed to the village to probe the boy’s death Friday and the state government removed a local policeman. The khap panchayat held court Tuesday night. Ramesh was ordered to leave the area immediately, said the officer. No one from the community is allowed to have any contact with Ramesh. He was also barred from participating in any public function, according to the judgment. (IANS)
Health awards presented to 22 doctors
New Delhi: A total of 22 doctors and 49 other para medical staff were on Saturday awarded with state awards for 2009-2010 for their outstanding performance in health services. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit commended dedication of medical staff in saving lives of critical patients. On the occasion, Delhi Health Minister A K Walia said the city’s government hospitals and medical colleges have been rated excellent in the country. He said that state awards for medical fraternity were being conferred every year to motivate the medical and para medical staff for better quality service to the citizens of Delhi. The awards are being conferred for more than the last 15 years. The ambit of award was extended with the announcement of the Chief Minister in 2006 and para medical staff was also brought under the scheme. Each awardee is being given a memento, citation, certificate and cash award. (UNI)
Army jawan killed in road accident
Aurangabad: A 26-year-old Army jawan was killed on the spot when his motorcycle collided with a tempo near Chowka village, about 15 km from here, on the Aurangabad-Jalgaon road on Friday night. According to rural police sources, the victim was identified as Santosh Chinchpure, a resident of Anni village in Sillod tehsil. He joined the army last year and was posted in Jammu. He was presently on leave. His father Sahebrao Chinchpure is also a military man and at present he is posted in Kashmir. (UNI)
