Aizawl: One building has been demolished and 53 others have received demolition orders since the Building Regulations Act came into effect from May 2, 2008, here.

Acting under the Act, the Aizawl Development Authority (ADA) had punished ten people for not abiding by the building regulations. So far the ADA had stayed the construction of 158 buildings.

The ADA till date received 3,499 applications for construction of buildings, of which 3,257 had been accepted. It had rejected 105 applicants and 55 applications were withdrawn. These included applications for constructions of 48 mobile phone towers, which had been granted.

The ADA, as demanded by the Aizawl Development Authority Act, 2005, made the building regulations its first priority.

The regulations are applicable to the design and structure of newly constructed buildings and dismantling, repairing, demolition and alteration of the existing buildings.

Most buildings in Aizawl have been constructed without certain safety measures and the fact that entire Mizoram falls under earthquake-prone zone, makes the city highly vulnerable to major disasters. Site plan, building plan, structural plan and structural drawing/specification are made by ADA-approved engineers/architect, who would further supervise the construction of the buildings. (UNI)
