‘Drowned’ girl found to be alive
Rangiya: A 21-year old girl, believed to have been drowned in April last, was found alive on Monday in Assam’s Nalbari district. The girl, identified as Mehrunissa of Dhui village under Hajo police station area of Kamrup district, went missing on April 29 last. On May 2 none but her father identified a body recovered from a pond at Bijulipathar area of the district as that of Mehrunissa and buried the body according to Islamic rites. However it now turned out that Mehrunissa, presumed to have slipped in the waterbody earlier, had eloped with an youth Nitul Ali to New Delhi where he worked and the duo got married thereafter, a police officer said. The police now suspect the body, buried by Mehrunissa’s family, to be that of another woman Rupali Rongpi who was allegedly killed by some youth and the body dumped into river. (PTI)
3 convicts escape jail in Tripura
Agartala: Three convicts, including two Bangladeshis, have escaped from Sonamura sub-divisional jail in West Tripura district, about 55 km from here, by scaling the wall of the jail, police said on Monday. Abu Taher (26), Ali Ahed (30) and Rafikul Islam (22) two Bangladeshis, used ropes for escaping from the jail on Sunday night. While Abu is an Indian, both Ali and Rafikul are Bangladshis. Both the Bangladeshis were serving jail term for dacoity, police said. BSF was alerted so that the jail breakers could not sneak into neighbouring Bangladesh. Jail Minister Manindra Reang visited the jail on Monday and ordered an inquiry. (PTI)
Medical student found dead
Agartala: A first year student of Agartala Government Medical College was on Monday found dead inside his hostel room at Kunjaban here, police said. The student identified as Khumto S (19) hails from Nagaland. Police said, his inmates informed the hostel authorities when they found that Khumto was not responding to their calls since morning. The students forced open the door which was locked from inside and found him lying on his bed. The police said the cause of his death would be known only after the postmortem report was out. (PTI)
Scarcity cripples life in Manipur
Imphal: Normal life was affected in Manipur following shortage of essential commodities, life saving drugs, petroleum products among other things due to twin indefinite strikes on the two highways of the state for over a month. People started lining up in front of many oil depots since yesterday to get few litres of petrol. Petrol was sold at Rs 150 per litre in black market and LPG at Rs 2,000 per cylinder. Work in most hospitals was disrupted and people were forced to go out of the state for normal operations as there was shortage of oxygen cylinders and life saving drugs. Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) had put up blockade since July 31 demanding district status for Sadar Hills which is under Senapati district. Opposing the demand, the United Naga Council (UNC) had resorted to another blockade on the highways. (UNI)
