SHILLONG: The Government has directed the State Police to conduct an inquiry into the seizure of Rs 7 lakh which was meant for GNLA ‘army chief’ Sohan D Shira at Chisobibra on Sunday afternoon.
“We have decided to order a police inquiry into this matter,” Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh told reporters on Monday.
Replying to a query, Lyngdoh said that the inquiry would also try to find out “if the politicians are also involved in this case”.
Interestingly the two GSU members were carrying the amount in an envelope with ‘Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Dainadubi’ scribbled on it.
Police also arrested three persons among whom two happened to be Garo Students’ Union (GSU) leaders from Mendipather zone along with the cash.
Working on intelligence inputs about the shipment of a huge amount of money from Mendipather area towards Williamnagar meant for the Garo militant outfit, special police pickets were set up at various routes connecting district headquarters Williamnagar.
”We want to get further information about such nexus of student union members and politicians with the GNLA possibly before the start of the Assembly session,” he added.
The police team intercepted a Maruti car (AS-01-AB 3734) with three occupants at Chisobibra, 7 kms from Williamnagar.
On inspecting the vehicle they came across a polythene bag that was stashed with Rs 7 lakh in the denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.
Inside the vehicle was the GSU Mendipather unit president Silchang G Momin (31) and Damas unit president Cizaral D Shira (30).
Both were arrested along with the driver Sabin Boro.
