Mum saves kids by pinning down attacking dog

London: A 31-year-old mother in Britain bravely saved her kids from a crazy dog that ripped their puppy into pieces.

Karen Greaves was enjoying a picnic in a park with her four-month-old daughter Amelia, five-year-old son Dylan, and their Cavalier King Charles spaniel Molly when they were attacked by a bullmastiff dog, Daily Express reported.

The dog was with its female owner. Within seconds it mauled 10-month-old puppy Molly to death. It then knocked little Amelia’s buggy to the ground.

Greaves, who sensed the crazy dog was about to attack the crying baby and her brother, suddenly grabbed the mastiff and wrestled it to the ground.

She along with the attacking bullmastiff’s owner pinned the dog to the ground until police arrived, as a group of teenagers standing nearby helped the kids to safety.

But Greaves suffered serious wounds to her hands and arms, as she was repeatedly bitten. She spent three days in hospital undergoing surgery and will be scarred for life.

Karen later said: “The dog seemed to just snap. I did everything I could to try to wrestle it from Molly but it had a look in its eyes that said it wasn’t going to stop for anything.”

“My children were screaming. I feared for them so I lay across the dog’s back and put my hands in its mouth and it basically ate my hands.”

The dog was later seized by police and taken away by the vets. (IANS)

Man,70, crosses English Channel in just 18 hours

London: A 70-year-old man Wednesday created a world record by becoming the oldest person to have swum across the English Channel.

Roger Allsopp, from Guernsey, a British Crown dependency, took nearly 18 hours to enter the record books as he made his way from Shakespeare Beach in Dover, Kent.

Aged 70 years and four months, Allsopp set off at 8 a.m. Tuesday and swam the 21 nautical miles for 17 hours and 51 minutes until he got to the French coast, the Daily Mail reported.

The former breast cancer surgeon took the accolade from former holder, George Brunstad, an American Airlines captain who did it aged 70 years and four days in August 2004.

Allsopp said: “This has been an incredible personal challenge for me…The fact that a man of my ‘grand’ age can achieve such a physical and mental challenge proves that you can live younger if you keep active in mind and body.”

His effort was recognised by the Guinness World Records.

Allsopp took on the challenge after watching an inscription at a pub in Dover that marked Brunstad’s cross-Channel achievement. (IANS)

British military officials using choppers as taxis

London: Senior military officials in Britain have been accused of using helicopters like taxis after running up bills for tens of thousands of pounds on short-haul flights.

According to a dossier obtained by Daily Mail Sunday, scores of trips were enjoyed by senior service chiefs, including the head of the army and a Royal Navy admiral.

Britain’s most senior military leaders are spending a “fortune” on chauffeur-driven cars, which in one quarter alone cost the taxpayer over 400,000 pounds, it said.

Ironically, junior defence ministers have given up the dedicated chauffeured cars used by their Labour predecessors to help reduce a 36 billion pounds black hole in the defence ministry finances.

They now share a pool cars or use public transport.

The news of lavish perks enjoyed by the top brass has outraged critics, especially when soldiers, sailors and airmen face losing their jobs following the most savage defence cuts in British history. (IANS)
