SHILLONG: College teachers in the State under the banner of the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) have decided to observe cease work from September 9 to 15 in pursuance of their various unfulfilled demands, putting into jeopardy the prospects of students who are set to appear in their selection examinations soon.
The MCTA is protesting against the delay in releasing the arrears and implementation of the revised pay scales as per the recommendations of the State Fourth Pay Commission.
MCTA president Dr Ruben Lyngdoh, on Wednesday, said, “We understand the concern of the students but we are calling our agitations in a slow and phased manner so that it will not affect their studies.”
It may be mentioned that the five-day cease work, which coincides with the autumn session of the State legislative Assembly, will affect the functioning of twenty-two colleges in the state.
Around five hundred college teachers under the banner of MCTA will participate in the cease work scheduled to begin from Friday.
While the teachers are demanding for the arrears and the revised pay scale, the State Education Minister RC Laloo has already stated that the State Government would pay the pending arrears to both teaching and non-teaching staff of the colleges only after the forthcoming Assembly Session.
Reacting to comments by Education Minister Prof RC Laloo that the Government would pay the pending arrears to both teaching and non-teaching staff only after the Assembly session, Lyngdoh said the Association was yet to receive any official intimation in this regard.
It may be reminded that the MCTA had boycotted the Teacher’s Day celebrations in the State on Monday.
