SHILLONG: In an attempt to spread awareness on the need to safeguard the environment, the North East Development and Financial Institution (NEDFi) launched a social campaign on Saturday by painting environmental related graffiti on the walls of the BSNL building here in the city.

On the occasion of its 16th incorporation day, NEDFi in collaboration with Riti Academy, Shillong and the student community of Shillong painted the wall of BSNL building with graffiti depicting the burning theme of global warming.

Twenty five students from Shillong spent over six hours to paint a 20-metre stretch of wall with graffiti depicting the effects of human indifference towards the earth.

The young students were assisted and supervised by senior artists from the Riti Academy of Visual Arts.

The brilliant art work of the school students impressed many passers-by who appreciated the hard work and the vision of the artists.

“I am amazed at how the children could mix colour so well to depict a real life agenda put forth by the United Nations worldwide,” DK Marboh, a lecturer at a city college commented, while spending a sizeable amount of time admiring the brilliant effort of the students.

On of the best images painted by the students depicted melting glaciers caused by global warming. “At first glance, you will not believe that it is the art work of school kids,” Marboh exclaimed.

Riti Academy founding chairman, Raphael Warjri, while expressing his happiness with the efforts, said, “This is just the beginning of young artists’ work coming out into the streets in Shillong.”

According to Warjri, the Academy has identified some more places in the city to draw some more meaningful arts which would only enhance the beauty of Shillong.

NeDFI Asst Manager Zubin Mandal assured that his company would try to help in making Shillong as an art city by engaging many more school children in the future.

“We will ensure that many more school children are able to imprint their visions on the walls and make Shillong the new art capital of the North East,” Mandal added.
