Besimari: Normal life was affected in most parts of Assam’s Darrang district on Tuesday following a 12-hour district bandh to protest the death of four jute farmers in a police firing at Besimari.
The bandh sponsors All Assam Minorities Students Union (AAMSU) supporters pelted stones on vehicles and damaged over 50 buses and cars, including that of media persons, official sources said.
With no impact of the bandh in the district headquarters Mangaldai town, they said, markets, business establishments, shops and offices remained closed across the district.
Educational institutions, however, were already scheduled to be closed on account of Laxmi Puja today. AAMSU picketers threw stones on the vehicles moving along NH-52 and other roads damaging over 50 vehicles. Police pickets were deployed on the NH and other important roads, while long-distance buses and cars were escorted in groups along the highway.
The bandh was called to protest the killing of four jute farmers and injury to eight others when police opened fire to quell a huge mob of cultivators who blocked NH-52 in protest against minimum support price of their products at Besimari. The jute farmers had attacked the on-duty policemen with stones and bricks injuring eight security personnel, including Mangaldai DSP (Hq) Fakhlur Islam and his PSO Najrul Islam. (PTI)
