Editor,
Apropos the alleged incident where the DSP of Tura had supposedly manhandled an elderly member of Tura Central Puja Committee on the immersion day (Oct 6, 2011) at Babupara, I have often heard of police high-handedness, but on proper enquiry it is mostly towards anti-social elements and on provocation. I have, never in my 55 years
of life, ever faced police harassment; perhaps that is because I always co-operate with them while they perform their duties. Therefore I fail to understand why a senior police officer would strike a 69 year old man! Is it because of some provocation?
I am a permanent resident of Tura and I have seen several religious festivals being celebrated here but I have never seen such heavy police deployment in any of the festivals except for Durga Puja. Why? Is it to protect the devotees? Or to protect the general public from the devotees who exhibit unruly behaviour particularly during the immersion day? The immersion processions cause much inconvenience to the general public as they are cut off from Tura bazaar area for the whole day due to the immersion at Babupara Main Road. I personally feel that the immersion site should be shifted to another suitable location outside the town area and the roads should not be blocked during such celebrations. Also something should be done about noise pollution, particularly at night. To avoid law and order problem, why can’t the immersion process be completed by evening before darkness sets in like in Shillong and other places?
Unruly devotees who create problems should not be allowed in public places/roads.

Shocking incident
Editor,
I am shocked beyond belief that an innocent seven year old child was brutally murdered in Tura allegedly as a human sacrifice to appease the gods. This incident is beyond belief and one cannot contemplate how the death of the child will benefit the believer. I wish the Chief Minister goes beyond rhetoric so that such incidents do not happen in the future and so that the guilty will face be duly punished.
Having spent my childhood in Tura and Shillong, this incident has deeply disturbed my conscience. However, I am surprised that the civil society bodies ( GSU included ) in Tura did not raise a hue and cry about this incident. Where has humanity disappeared?
To the innocent child – may you rest in peace in an angel’s arms!

Fraudulent insurance claims
Editor,
It is learnt from reliable sources that a particular advocate of Tura has not been allowed to withdraw money amounting to nearly a crore and this is lying with the Tura Civil Court. As per the awards passed by the Court in connection with motor vehicle accidents, the insurance companies have been depositing the awarded amount with interest with the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) at Tura from time to time.
The reason for such denial is because this particular counsel is not in a position to produce his so called claimants/victims’ before the Court. Most of the MACT cases are fake and manipulated by a few advocates in connivance with the police etc. Kudos to the present Deputy Commissioner of Tura for his integrity and justice and for insisting on proof of identity of claimants at the time of disbursing the claim amount. It will be in order to return the deposited money to the respective insurance companies; after all it belongs to the public.
