Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Tuesday informed that the Congress government in Assam would definitely fulfill its election promise to have an Upper House in Assam Assembly.
Talking to the media here on Tuesday, the AICC leader said,”An Upper House in Assam Assembly is a necessity given that the state is a mosaic of ethnic groups, all of whom needs to ne prepresented properly in the House.”
Regarding the the campiagn against mega dams that are being constructed in Upper reaches of rivers flowing down to Assam from Arunachal Pradesh, the senior Congress leader said the party would soon send its representatives including legislators to talks to farmers and common people to remove apprehensions in their mind about adverse impact that is feared due those dams.
He said even though dams were being constructed in a seismic zone, technologies were available to construct suitable dam structure in those area and cited the example of Tehri dam in support of his argument. He said the campaign against dams fearing adverse downstream impact.
Regarding the protests in Assa by opposition parties over India-Bangladesh land deal aimed at resolving border dispute between the two countries, Digvijay Singh said the matter had been now put to rest after the Congress government in Assam explained it properly in the special session of Assaembly held on Monday that the state had not been made to cede land in bacause of the deal with Bangladesh.
