Whither Umroi airport?

Editor,

This is the tourist season and many will be coming to Shillong for the Autumn Festival. A lot of festivities and a variety of cultural programmes are planned for the Festival. But the welcome to the tourists arriving via the Umroi airport is poor. Firstly, the schedule of flights is not regular and flights often get cancelled, at the last moment, which would deter many a tourist from planning a trip to Shillong.

Secondly, the road from the Umroi Airport to the Umiam Lake is in a dilapidated condition and gives a sad picture of the state of affairs. True, the road is being widened and improved for the Shillong Bye-Pass, yet I believe it is the responsibility of the authorities concerned to maintain the traffic and the existing roads in a presentable condition. The responsibility of the developer/contractor towards maintenance of the existing road also cannot be overlooked.

Thankfully, the P.W.D. has taken up improvement of the riding quality of the road from the Umiam Lake to the Shillong City, but the portion of road connecting the National Highway to the Airport at Umroi also deserves attention.

Yours etc.

 More football please!

 Editor

I place this humble request to you to publish more of the I-League matches and the Local football matches in the paper, because what seems to me is that a single cricket match is dominating the sports space of the paper.

 SBI harassing loan customers

 Editor,

In Sept this year I accompanied my sister to State Bank Of India, SARB Department, Shillong which is the recovery cell for loan recovery, for the purpose of repaying her loan account. The bank official asked her to clear all dues by and calculated the outstanding amount + interest + charges + 15% commission as extra payment. I personally feel this is a harassment to the innocent borrower. It is like illegal collection and indirect extortion. I inquired from other nationalized banks if they too calculated on the same basis but they all said there is no such demand for extra commission. Everything is adjusted with interest portion only. This issue needs to be raised before the Reserve bank of India (RBI). I request other victimised borrowers to contact me by email so that a joint complaint can be sent to SBI Head office and RBI. I request SBI SARB to stop harassment innocent people.

  No truth in MLA’s claim

 Editor,

Apropos your report (ST 26 Oct 2011), it’s heartening to note that finally the MLA of War Jaintia has declared what he has done for the constituency. Kudos to HNPF for the role in awakening him to show the voters of the constituency what plans he for the constituency.

But the real issue is that of translating the plans to visible action. The various projects mentioned used the words “sanctioned and implemented” but in reality most of the projects claimed by the news report are non existent. Lets hope that such works translate to reality soon.

As far as the financial assistance to schools is concerned, no such financial assistance was given. The MLA has only assisted his own men for their own profit and they construct such buildings on their own. The School authorities are mere spectators and have no say in any matter relating to the construction of such buildings. His men try different means to get the NOC of the school authorities. There is one school in particular which does not give NOC to the MLA’s men so obviously the school does not feature in the report.

Yours etc.,
