SHILLONG: The NEIGRIHMS director Dr ME Yeolekar has quietly left the Institute on Tuesday.

Sources on Tuesday informed that Dr Yeolekar’s departure was imminent since he had tendered his resignation since August last.

According to sources, NEIGRIHMS was run very tentatively in the past few months since Dr Yeolekar was awaiting directive from the Union Health Ministry for his next assignment. This, ad-hocism has affected the functioning of the Institute, the sources claim.

Meanwhile, sources also alleged that the outgoing director has done nothing substantial for the Institute other than erecting the statue of late Prime Minister Ms Indira Gandhi, which is yet to be unveiled.

Despite the shortage of faculties in NEIGRIHMS, sources said that Dr Yeolekar has failed to take the required initiative to address this problem and to meet the minimum requirement of faculties as prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

“We have less than a year to meet the faculty requirement before the MCI delegation visits the Institute in 2012. It would all depend on the new director who would be taking over to ensure that this problem is addressed at the earliest,” sources said.

When contacted, NEIGRIHMS deputy director Dinesh Sawkmie confirmed that Dr Yeolekar has left the institute.

“The Centre has accepted his resignation,” Sawkmie told The Shillong Times.

Replying to a query, he said that the Union Ministry is yet to take a call who would replace Dr Yeolekar as the next director.

When asked about Dr Yeolekar’s new assignment, Sawkmie said he is not aware of it since the outgoing director quietly left the institute without informing anyone.

Earlier, it was reported that former Head of Radiotherapy department in Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore Dr (Mrs) Faith Rangad is likely to take over as the director NEIGRIHMS.

The name of Dr Rangad had emerged following Dr Yeolekar’s request to the Union Health Ministry to accept his resignation.

It is learnt that the State Government is also backing the appointment of Dr Rangad.
